Offcuts are unavoidable when rows end at walls, boards are staggered and tiles are centered. Some offcuts can begin another row; others cannot be reused.
A simple rectangle laid in a straight pattern produces less waste than a room with alcoves, angled walls or multiple transitions.
Match the allowance to the installation
Five percent can work for a square room, experienced installation and modular material. Ten percent gives more breathing room for ordinary residential work.
Diagonal tile, herringbone, large-format pieces, natural variation or breakage justify 15% or a project-specific takeoff.
- 5%: simple room, straight layout
- 10%: most standard installations
- 15%+: complex geometry or pattern
Convert area into whole packs
After adding waste, divide by the coverage per pack and always round up. The purchased area will usually be slightly higher than the target because packs are indivisible.
Keeping a small amount from the same production batch can help with future repairs when colors or patterns change between batches.
